Orchid for her 50th

This is my first cake for 2011.

I got to practice my sugar flower making skills. I made all the pieces for the orchid and then while putting it together I broke the throat. I tried to repair it but while it was drying I made another just in case. I like the second attempt much better and so I used that one.
The lady who ordered this cake sent me a photo of a cake she liked as the example and as it turned out, it was actually a cake that one of my contacts made. So, Sarah, I hope that I was able to do your design justice. Thanks for the inspiration.

My Christmas Stocking cake

Christmas Stocking

Last year, I really wanted to make this cake, but of course I left things to the last minute and didn't have the time, so as well as making the Holly cake, I made time for this one as well. This cake design also come from a book I often refer to.
I was excited to try out the technique that made the pattern on the fondant covering the stocking. I used two different dishcloths rolled over the fondant to create the two patterns on the surface. It took some practice but I was glad that it turned out so well for an experiment cake.
I took the cake to my family's Christmas dinner, and honestly I'm not sure how it turned out taste wise because I never had any. I was too into the trifle that was brought by some one else. I had two helpings of that. It's a good thing I don't have that opportunity very often or I'd be in big trouble, emphasis on Big.

I have a wonderful book which I refer to often. The Essential guide to Cake Decorating. It has some great ideas for some beautiful cakes, and I am always looking for reasons to make them. I decided that this Christmas I would make this cake just to see if I could.
As it turned out I had a request for a cake for a 40th anniversary party that was to be held on Christmas eve. The only thing that was needed was an inscription for the anniversary couple.
I loved how the icicles on the swags turned out, and I like the idea of the snow mounds at the base but I honestly think that no one understood what they were. If I had done them differently it may have been more obvious.

One

Zoey turned one. Her mom sent me a photo of the invite and wanted the cake to have a similar look, only insted of it saying "ONE" she wanted it to say "ZOEY"

So here's the picture of the invite.
And here's what I came up with for the cake.

This cake was made for a send off brunch for a church music director. My guitar drawing skills need a bit more work, but they were quite happy with it.

Spring in December

These characters are popular. I did this cake in November for a friend and then as soon as it was done I received another order for it, in December. In the process of making the last one I completely forgot to take a picture. The only difference was that it did not have any balloons because the parents had me do a fairly long inscription for their daughter.
